A local man faces felony charges in Madison County involving distribution of child pornography, according to a press release from the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

George Harold Melton, 52, of Altavista, was arrested June 23 in Campbell County and charged with nine counts of distribution of child pornography and five counts of child solicitation by communication system.

According to the press release, a Madison County investigator, who is a member of the Northern Virginia-Washington, D.C. Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, posed as a 13-year-old girl in an Internet chat room in an undercover computer operation.

Melton allegedly made regular contact with the investigator, who he allegedly believed was a 13-year-old girl in Madison County. He allegedly sent "multiple images" by computer, said the press release.

The Campbell County Sheriff's Office and the Central Virginia Computer Crime Task Force assisted the Madison County Sheriff's Office in executing a search warrant at a Campbell County residence, said the release.

Melton is being held without bond at the Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange.

Capt. L.T. Guthrie, of the Campbell County Sheriff's Office, said Monday that in addition to the sheriff's office, the Altavista Police Department was also involved in executing the arrest warrants issued by the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

Guthrie said Melton does not face any charges in Campbell County. The Campbell County Sheriff's Office is investigating some items removed from the home, he said.
